A Light City Escapade

ACT I

Scene 1

(A bedroom, two figures on the bed having sex, they are going hard at it, suddenly someone starts banging on the door .)

BRUTUS

Open this door right away!

(The movement on the bed stops abruptly, jenny pushes Johnny off her. Johnny is not having any of it and tries to continue, and Jenny exasperated cuffs him on the ear.)

JOHNNY

Why did you do that?

JENNY

Are you deaf or just pretending to be? Can't you hear someone at the door?

JOHNNY

We'll open it later.

He tries to continue, jenny pushes him away and stands up.

JENNY

What if it's my boyfriend?

JOHNNY

Tell him to come back later.

BRUTUS

(Hitting the door harder this time) Jenny open this door right now

JENNY

(Alarmed.) That's my boyfriend!

(Johnny jumps out of bed and runs around the room in a panic, wearing his clothes and looking for possible exits, suddenly they freeze, and Johnny starts to narrate the story.)

JOHNNY

You must be wondering how we got into this fix, to understand this story we have to start from the very beginning, you see, I was born in Sun city to a family of six children, I attended the model sch...

JENNY

(Angrily) Will you just get to the story and stop talking about yourself, no one cares about your life history.

JOHNNY

Don't rush me woman, I'll say the story how I want, okay in order not to waste your time, I'll start the story from the day before yesterday. You see it was Christmas time and my childhood friend invited me to come to spend it in the light city, he told me how beautiful the women were, and oh he did not lie. You see, I had just gotten to light city, waiting at the bus stop for my friend to come to pick me up when I saw this lady staring at me; I wasn't surprised, Daz how star do you know, you see the women can't resist the shine. I knew she was shy, so I decided to put her out of her misery...

Jenny who had been listening in bewilderment cuts him.

JENNY

Hey! That's not how I remember the story, I, staring at you? You were lucky I spoke to you at all, you were drenched and wholly soaked in your sweat under the scorching sun. People let's get back to the real story.

The light dims in the bedroom and comes on the other side of the stage. A bus stop, Johnny is standing in the sun weighed down like a mule with bags on both shoulders; he is sweating profusely.

JOHNNY

If I stay under this sun a little longer, all the fluids in my body will dry up; this city should have been named sun city, not light city.

(He drops his bags.)

Where is this foolish friend of mine? He said he'd be waiting for me, I've been waiting here for an hour now, and he is nowhere to be seen, let me get some water to drink before I die of thirst.

(Jenny walks onto the stage; she is looking resplendent. Johnny is mesmerized, he comports himself and decides to approach her, he stops and considers his appearance, but then he shrugs it off and walks to her.)

JOHNNY

Hey beautiful

She stops and gestures at herself inquisitively

Yes, you, good morning beautiful. I'm Johnny, and you are?

JENNY

Too busy to talk to you.

JOHNNY

Hey Wena, no need to be feisty, you see I'm new in light city and...

JENNY

(Cuts in.) Mister, I don't have time for this, I have somewhere to be

She leaves him standing, Johnny's friend comes on stage

TONY

Hey brother, long time no see, how are you?

JOHNNY

I'm good brother, tell me you know that beauty that just left

TONY

Eish, that one? Forget about it bro, that's a no go area.

JOHNNY

What do you mean?

TONY

You see, what I mean is that you can have all the women in the light city but not that one

JOHNNY

Why not?

TONY

You ask too many questions brother, let's go home.

They exit the stage, the light dims on the bus stop and comes back on the bedroom, brute bangs on the door again

BRUTUS

Jenny, I know you are in there with that newbie, open this door before I bring it down!

JENNY

The window! Go out through the window!

JOHNNY

Good thinking.

He makes to jump out of the window, and then he remembers something.

Wait, if I leave now, how will they know the rest of the story?

JENNY

Then finish the story quickly!

JOHNNY

But you said I was lying.

JENNY

Will you finish the story and stop complaining?

JOHNNY

Okay, okay, don't rush me. So later that night, Tony decides to take me clubbing…

The light dims on the bedroom and comes on the other side of the stage

Johnny and Tony are sitting at the bar

TONY

Johnny, I'm telling you, there are more beautiful women than that one, this is the light city, it is filled with beautiful women.

JOHNNY

I don't want any other beautiful woman, just that one.

TONY

You'll be missing a lot then, I'm going to speak with some honey, join me if you want.

Johnny doesn't move, jenny walks into the bar, she goes towards a spot in the bar like it's a familiar spot, she sees something displeasing and turns back, she catches sight of Johnny, recognizes him and goes to seat with him.

JENNY

Hey newbie, how is it going?

Johnny is flustered, and he almost spills his drink.

JOHNNY

Going well, you stopped being busy?

Jenny

Sorry about that, I was in a hurry.

JOHNNY

No problem.

Jenny

So tell me newbie, what are you doing in the light city.

JOHNNY

I came to spend Christmas with my childhood friend and also to have some fun.

Jenny

Fun huh, any luck with that?

JOHNNY

I guess, what are you doing at the bar by yourself?

Jenny

I came to meet up with my boyfriend, but then he already found some entertainment for himself.

Brutus is sitting at a corner with two girls on both sides of him.

JOHNNY

Oh, I see. So you are not enough entertainment for him? Eish, some men are just too greedy.

Jenny

Look how you talk like you all are not the same thing.

JOHNNY

Same thing? You see, I am not like other guys, I'm always contented.

JENNY

Hmmm really, so you are telling me you don't have anyone waiting on you at home?

JOHNNY

Not a soul.

They are so engrossed in their conversation that they don't notice Brutus walking up to them, he clears his throat to catch their attention.

JENNY

Hey baby, didn't see you coming over.

BRUTUS

I didn't want you to, who is this guy I've never seen him before.

JENNY

He's new in town. He came from Sun city.

BRUTUS

Oh, so you are a newbie, eh?

JOHNNY

Yes?

BRUTUS

I am Brutus (he makes a big show of himself) this here is my girl jenny so be careful, don't try anything funny. Enjoy your holiday.

He walks away with jenny (while he talked, jenny slips her number to Johnny). Tony comes over in alarm.

TONY

What happened, I just saw Brutus leave here.

JOHNNY

Yes.

TONY

What did he say?

JOHNNY

Nothing.

TONY

You are lucky bro. Very fortunate. Usually, you would have received a punch to your face. Anyway, let's go home before you get into real trouble.

The light dims on the bar and comes into the bedroom.

JENNY

Oh, how you lie, why did you leave out the part where you were shivering like a wet dog. (to the audience) he almost peed himself when he saw Brutus I tell you.

JOHNNY

I don't remember that happening, all I remember are your sad eyes when you left me

Brute bangs on the door again, the door sounds like it's about to give in.

Johnny

Let me quickly finish this story before this Brute comes in. So the next day, I call jenny, and she invited me to her place, I went in the evening and talked and talked, we made dinner until it was too late for me to leave, but we both knew she didn't want me to.

JENNY

Wow, or you never wanted to leave.

JOHNNY

We both know you didn't want me to leave, and you wanted me as much as I did want you. You couldn't make the first move. Anyways I stayed longer, and that led us to here.

He is cut off by louder banging on the door, he runs towards the window as the door finally gives way, Brutus enters and sees them, and everybody stands still.

They do the mannequin challenge while the intro of Dead by Migos starts playing.

(Blackout.)
